Campervan Owners in England Face Rising Insurance Costs

Campervan owners in England are being reminded that they must have proper insurance in place — and for many, that could mean spending between £250 and over £1,000, depending on personal circumstances.

According to an article by Birmingham Live, a campervan requires its own specific insurance policy and cannot be adequately covered by standard car insurance.

In some cases, campervan insurance may actually be cheaper than traditional car or van policies, but prices vary based on a range of factors including the vehicle’s make and model, current market value, storage location, driving history, annual mileage, and any previous claims.

Daniel Lopez, the managing director of Sussex Campervans, described van life as “camping with standards”

“Campervan life suits people of all ages. The one thing they tend to have in common is a love of the outdoors and the desire to make the most of their leisure time,” Daniel said.

Coverage is also affected by location. “A high-risk postcode can make a huge difference to the premium,” says the Caravan Guard marketing director, Craig Thompson.

“Physical security such as steering wheel locks can also qualify for insurance savings, as do safety devices such as reversing cameras – as you can imagine, reversing prangs are not uncommon,” Thompson added.

Vehicle condition and resale value play a role too. “A 2017 version of the Transporter would probably cost about £30,000 due to more modern used campervans being in better condition and therefore holding their resale value,” Roberts said.

Motorhome insurance typically covers incidents like traffic accidents, storm damage, theft, break-ins, and personal injury.

A comprehensive policy is required by law for any vehicle that is driven or even parked on UK roads, whether it’s a motorhome or campervan.

The warning comes as campervan and motorhome use continues to rise across the UK, especially among outdoor enthusiasts seeking flexible travel options.

With resale values staying high and certain postcodes impacting premiums, ensuring the right insurance coverage is crucial — especially for those who plan to use their vehicles for seasonal trips or festival weekends.
