The Bureau of Land Management’s Northern California District opened three popular recreation sites in northeast California for the summer season, providing expanded camping and outdoor opportunities in the region.
The North Eagle Lake and Pit River campgrounds officially opened on May 1, while the Hobo Camp day-use area is scheduled to open on Saturday, May 17.
According to a press release, located northwest of Susanville, the North Eagle Lake Campground offers 20 developed campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The campground accommodates recreational vehicles up to 35 feet long and provides potable water. A camp host is stationed on-site. The nightly fee is $8.
In addition to the developed campground, the BLM provides shoreline camping at Rocky Point East and Rocky Point West on the north shore of Eagle Lake. These sites are undeveloped, offering no services or facilities, and are intended for fully self-contained camping. The sites are open year-round, weather permitting.
The Pit River Campground, situated near Fall River Mills in eastern Shasta County, also features eight individual campsites, a group campsite, a kayak launch, and an accessible fishing pier for visitors with disabilities.
The individual campsite fee is $8 per night, while the group campsite is available for $12 nightly. A camp host is present at the facility.
The Hobo Camp day-use area, located at the west edge of Susanville, will open its main vehicle gate daily from 8 a.m. until a half-hour after sunset throughout the season.
The gate will open early at 5 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, for the Lassen County Junior Fishing Derby and again on Saturday, May 24, for the opening day of California’s stream fishing season to allow early fishing access.
Hobo Camp is accessible to walkers, bicyclists, and horseback riders via the Bizz Johnson Trail, which connects from the Susanville Railroad Depot Visitor Center and trailheads on Lassen Street and Miller Road.
The site offers picnic tables, grilling grates, fire rings, and ample open space for outdoor activities.
Additional amenities include toilets and parking areas within a pine grove setting, with parking available for large vehicles and horse trailers. A host is on-site to assist visitors.
