Wilderluxe Lake Keepit Launches as Eco-Informed Glamping Destination in Outback NSW

Last April, a new glamping destination opened in the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales, offering visitors a nature-based experience with an emphasis on Indigenous storytelling and stargazing.

Wilderluxe Lake Keepit, located near the sizeable Lake Keepit and within reach of Tamworth and Gunnedah, has officially launched its operations, adding to the growing trend of premium outdoor accommodation in regional Australia.

The lodge features eight dome-shaped “Star Tents,” each named after elements of Aboriginal astronomy, such as Djirri Djirri (messenger bird), Baiame (Sky Father), and Dhinawan (Emu in the Sky).

These tents are equipped with retractable roofs and private outdoor bathtubs, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the night sky without leaving their accommodation. A kitchenette and a gas barbecue offer in-room dining convenience.

Beyond the individual units, the retreat centers around the Gilay Guest Lounge, which acts as a communal hub for guests.

The property also hosts the Big Sky dinner experience, which includes a grazing table, drinks, and a screening of Big Sky Dreaming — a film produced exclusively for the lodge.

In the film, Kamilaroi elder Uncle Len Waters shares stories from the Dreaming, adding cultural depth to the evening experience. “Dinner and a show” concludes with fireside drinks and s’mores.

Recreational amenities include access to stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, fishing gear, and mountain bikes, according to a report by Australian Traveller

For those interested in aviation, the area is notable for having hosted the 2020 Women’s World Gliding Championships. The local soaring club operates year-round, and scenic flights are also available.

For business owners in the outdoor hospitality sector, Wilderluxe Lake Keepit represents an example of how high-end, culturally informed glamping experiences can be effectively integrated into regional tourism.

The use of Indigenous narratives, eco-conscious design, and multi-sensory guest programming illustrates a model that balances environmental sensitivity, cultural respect, and experiential value.

Its location along a travel corridor between Sydney and Byron Bay may also position it well within broader tourism flows, enhancing its appeal as both a destination and a case study in sustainable, experience-driven outdoor accommodation.

Packages at Wilderluxe require a two-night minimum stay and include daily breakfast, access to recreational equipment, and the Big Sky dinner event.

With the glamping market continuing to expand, developments like Wilderluxe Lake Keepit are setting benchmarks for immersive guest engagement and regional destination appeal.
