South Australia Seizes Opportunity in Booming Fishing Tourism

South Australia is set to ride the wave of the booming fishing tourism sector, with more than 800,000 holidaymakers casting a line each year.

The state is launching a statewide survey to plan for the sector’s growth and deliver on an election commitment to develop an integrated strategy. Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison highlighted that recreational fishing already added AU$380 million to the state’s visitor economy and represented about one per cent of SA’s gross state product.

From surf angling for salmon on the Limestone Coast to chasing bluefin tuna off Cape Jervis or Victor Harbour, fishing has become a significant driver of visitation across the state and dispersal of tourism dollars.

“Hundreds of thousands of visitors head to our rivers, reservoirs and oceans each year to try their luck with a fishing rod and we are looking to see what else can be done to not only better manage but … grow fishing experiences and destinations,” Bettison said.

Recreational fishing is a crucial contributor to tourism, bringing benefits to regional towns and communities, including extra money injected into pubs, cafes, caravan parks, and shops.

The survey, which will run from June 20 to July 27, is a first step in the development of the government’s Recreational Fishing Tourism Strategy, set to launch in March next year, according to Yahoo! Sport.

Primary Industries Minister Clare Scriven emphasized the significant role recreational fishing plays in supporting regional SA communities.

From accommodation, services, food and drinks, fuel, bait and so much more, recreational fishing is a key driver for visitors to experience South Australia’s regions, given the vast and often unique fishing opportunities in South Australia,” she said.

A South Australian Tourism Commission research project based on industry consultation in 2020 found a disconnect between existing charter fishing tour operators and the broader tourism industry. An increase in engagement and partnership opportunities was recommended, including boosting marketing and promotional content.

The initiative by South Australia to capitalize on the booming fishing tourism sector is a prime example of how outdoor recreational activities and attractions like fishing can help boost caravan park businesses.

Such activities not only attract visitors but also encourage them to stay longer, thereby increasing their spending in the local area.
