The Shire of Exmouth in Western Australia is gearing up for a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event, as a hybrid solar eclipse is set to take place on April 20, 2023.
This rare astronomical phenomenon, which occurs when the Moon’s shadow falls on only some sections of the Earth due to the curvature of the planet, will be visible from select locations in Western Australia, including Exmouth and Onslow.
Exmouth, in particular, is expected to attract up to 10,000 visitors. It will be the only location to experience a total solar eclipse, where the Moon will cover 100% of the sun, according to a report by Pilbara News.
To accommodate the expected influx of tourists, the Shire of Exmouth has recently opened bookings for serviced sites at the council’s overflow camping ground on Welch Street.
The serviced sites, which are available for a minimum of four nights from April 7-29, measure 8×8 meters and come with basic amenities such as showers, portable toilets, a camp kitchen, food trucks, and coffee vans.
The Shire of Exmouth President, Darlene Allston, expressed her excitement in welcoming visitors to Exmouth for this once-in-a-lifetime event and added that they have been working with the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science, and Innovation to make the necessary preparations.
