The Woods Reserve Campground (Australia) on Corin Dam Road has begun preparations for a major redevelopment that will see the site closed in November 2025 while upgrades are carried out to improve safety and visitor facilities.
The work follows a AU$3.68 million investment from the ACT Government in the 2024-25 budget for improvements across the Woods Reserve and Gibraltar Falls precinct.
The package includes new signage, walking trails, and safety upgrades to the Gibraltar Falls viewing area, alongside modernized amenities for campers and day users.
According to a press release, Executive Branch Manager for the ACT Parks and Conservation Service Michaela Watts said the initiative demonstrates the government’s focus on improving the quality of outdoor experiences in the region.
“We know Canberrans and visitors to the ACT love Woods Reserve and the campground,” Watts said.
“These upgrades will make a range of improvements for all visitors including more accessible camping and day-use experiences, new walking tracks and lookouts, upgraded facilities and enhanced signage throughout the area,” she added.
Among the planned upgrades is a redesigned camping area featuring new walk-in and drive-in sites. The facilities will also include toilets and hot showers, aimed at accommodating a wider range of visitors.
Day-use amenities are also part of the project, with plans for new barbecues, picnic shelters, and recreational trails. According to Watts, these enhancements are designed to support both casual day trips and extended stays.
“Parking will also be upgraded for day users as well as campers, which is going to be especially important as the Woods Reserve carpark will become the new access point for the Gibraltar Falls viewing platform,” she said.
The redevelopment will also shift access to Gibraltar Falls. The existing viewing platform will be supported by new safety measures, and the upgraded carpark at Woods Reserve will serve as the central entry point for visitors.
The closure will affect not only campers but also day visitors, as the entire precinct—including the Gibraltar Falls viewing area—will be off-limits while construction is underway.
“While Woods Reserve Campground is closed, I encourage you to check out some of our other great campgrounds and walking trails or head out to one of your local reserves,” Watts said.
She highlighted Honeysuckle Campground as an alternative option, noting its access to Booroomba Rocks and Honeysuckle Creek.
“Honeysuckle Campground offers access to Booroomba Rocks and Honeysuckle Creek and is another favourite campsite in the ACT. With 39 reserves that make up Canberra Nature Park, Canberrans are never far from a great opportunity for adventure,” she said.
