G’day Group Acquires Lake Tinaroo Park, Expands Discovery Parks Footprint in Queensland

G’day Group expanded its Queensland portfolio with the acquisition of Lake Tinaroo, which will operate as Discovery Parks – Lake Tinaroo.

The park is located in Far North Queensland, about 1 hour and 30 minutes southwest of Cairns.

The acquisition adds another regional destination to the Discovery Parks network and reflects G’day Group’s ongoing strategy of investing in large-format, regionally focused parks.

For private campground owners and operators, the move highlights continued consolidation activity in Australia’s regional outdoor hospitality sector and the operational focus larger groups are placing on scale and shoulder-season demand.

Grant Wilckens, founder and chief executive officer of G’day Group, said the acquisition provided operational advantages tied to portfolio scale and broader market reach, per a recent report by The Hotel Conversation.

“We have a long-term ambition for Discovery Parks to be the most loved brand in regional tourism, and iconic lakeside parks such as Lake Tinaroo are central to that vision,” Wilckens said.

He added that while the park was already performing well, the group identified opportunities to increase year-round visitation through marketing and operational improvements.

Discovery Parks – Lake Tinaroo spans approximately 6.6 hectares of freehold land and sits adjacent to Lake Tinaroo and its dam.

Recreational amenities at the park include a splashpad, two swimming pools, a jumping pillow, a basketball court, and a games room, with additional access to boating, kayaking, swimming, and fishing due to its proximity to the lake.

G’day Group said the acquisition aligns with its broader program of investing in regional tourism assets and enhancing performance through operational upgrades and destination marketing. The purchase price or whether capital improvements have been scheduled was not disclosed.

For private campground owners and operators, the transaction underscores how larger operators are prioritizing flagship regional locations that can support diversified amenities and longer average lengths of stay.

The emphasis on scale and network-driven marketing may increase competitive pressure in established regional destinations.

The acquisition also illustrates how portfolio operators are targeting assets with existing infrastructure that can be optimized rather than developed from the ground up.

For independent operators, this trend highlights the importance of reinvestment, amenity mix and positioning within regional tourism ecosystems.
