Expanding EV Charging Ports in RV Parks: A Boost for South Australia’s Green Tourism

The Royal Automobile Association (RAA) of South Australia is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging network across the region, with ten new charging sites set to be constructed this month.

The new sites will include seven 7kW Destination charging sites, two 150kW Rapid charging sites, and one 200kW Ultra-rapid charging site. These Rapid and Ultra-rapid chargers, which will allow EV drivers to recharge their vehicles in just 10-45 minutes, are the first of the 54 Rapid and Ultra-rapid charging sites planned for the network.

Andrew Howard, RAA’s EV Charging Program Director, stated that the new charging sites going into construction in June demonstrated the growing reach of the network into metro and regional South Australia

“With 25% of the network already completed as of May, and the first Rapid and Ultra-Rapid chargers now under construction, the rollout of the RAA Charge network is well underway,” he said.

The importance of this development for Caravan and Holiday Parks and campgrounds cannot be overstated.

As the number of EVs on the road increases, the demand for charging stations at these locations is also expected to rise. By installing EV charging ports, these establishments can cater to the needs of EV owners, thereby attracting a wider range of customers.

Several of the new charging sites are located at RV parks and campgrounds, including Links Lady Bay Resort in Normanville, Wallaroo Holiday Park in Wallaroo, Laura Community Caravan Park in Laura, Pine Country Caravan Park in Mt. Gambier, and Blue Lake Caravan Park in Mt. Gambier.

According to an RAA news release, these locations will support the Type 2 plug, while the Rapid and Ultra-rapid charging sites will feature a mix of CCS2 and CHAdeMO plugs.

The installation of EV charging ports at RV/Caravan/Holiday Parks and campgrounds also has environmental benefits. By encouraging the use of EVs, these establishments can contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Furthermore, the presence of charging stations can help alleviate ‘range anxiety’ for EV drivers, making it more convenient for them to choose these locations for their stays.

The RAA Charge network is being delivered with the assistance of a $12.35 million grant from the Government of South Australia. Once the network is complete in 2024, 75% of the charging sites will be located in regional SA, and 98% of the planned charging sites will be located less than 200 km apart.

This extensive network will significantly enhance the accessibility of EV charging stations across the region.

The expansion of the RAA Charge network and the installation of EV charging ports at Caravan and Holiday Parks and campgrounds is a significant development for the EV sector in South Australia.

Not only does it cater to the growing number of EVs on the road, but it also has the potential to attract a wider range of customers to these establishments. As the network continues to expand, it will play a crucial role in promoting the use of EVs and contributing to environmental sustainability.
