Central Coast Leads NSW EV Charging Expansion with 30 New Ports

The Central Coast is set to enhance its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure as part of a statewide initiative led by the New South Wales Government.

Through the second round of the EV Destination Charging grants program, 17 new EV charging sites with 30 charging ports will be established across the region. This effort aims to accommodate the increasing number of EVs traveling to tourist destinations in regional NSW.

The $20 million EV Destination Charging grants program is expected to install over 1,300 EV charging ports at more than 500 locations statewide.

These chargers are designed to offer convenient options for both locals and visitors and complement the 189 fast charging stations already funded under the NSW EV Strategy. Fast chargers will be strategically placed at 100-kilometer intervals along major regional routes.

Tourism businesses and local councils have shown significant interest in the program, with accommodation providers such as motels, hotels, and caravan parks emerging as key participants.

On the Central Coast, new EV chargers will be installed in locations including Budgewoi, Kulnura, Pretty Beach, West Gosford, and Wyoming. These sites encompass a mix of hospitality venues, accommodation providers, and other popular destinations.

According to a press release, the NSW Government has also opened applications for the third round of the grant program. This phase will focus on addressing EV charging gaps along established regional road trip routes.

Businesses, councils, and landowners in regional NSW are encouraged to apply for funding to host EV chargers and attract more visitors. Further details are available on the NSW Government’s Energy website.

“By expanding our electric vehicle charging network, we’re not just improving convenience for residents and visitors,” Minister for the Central Coast David Harris emphasized. “We’re also powering our local economy as more EV drivers mean more business for the Central Coast.”

“With more and more drivers switching to electric vehicles, more people are planning their trips around EV charging locations,” a member of Gosford Liesl Tesch highlighted.

Member for the Entrance David Mehan noted that the initiative would boost local tourism and provide greater charging opportunities for EV drivers.
