Caravans and Cabins: Innovative Solutions for Commonwealth Games 2026 Accommodation Crisis

With the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2026, the government is exploring options to address the anticipated accommodation crisis in regional Victoria (Australia). One proposal under consideration involves housing tourists, staff, and officials in caravans and cabins, as hotels have been hesitant to build new rooms for the influx of visitors.

To expand accommodation capacity, the government is turning to the caravan and holiday park sector, potentially including high-end caravan models, a Daily Telegraph report revealed.

Manufacturers or retailers could be encouraged to make caravans available for hire in regional centers, catering to tourists, workers, volunteers, and officials. Upgrades to caravan and holiday parks, as well as utilizing showgrounds and other spaces, could also provide additional accommodation options.

The government is reportedly considering capitalizing on the lucrative caravan market to boost attendance at the Games. Traveler groups, including the so-called “Grey nomads,” could be enticed to purchase more tickets for sporting events and volunteer at the Games.

Sean Jenner, chief executive of the holiday park chain Big 4, said their camping grounds offer a “strong breadth” of accommodation, including fully-equipped one, two, and three-bedroom cabins. He added that each Big 4 site is independently owned, and individual park owners would determine their involvement in the Commonwealth Games.

Jenner also cited the example of Big 4 Melbourne in Coburg, which was used for quarantine during the Covid-19 lockdowns due to spare capacity.

However, school holidays may pose a challenge, as the Commonwealth Games is scheduled for 2026 when Big 4 sites usually reach full capacity. In preparation for the Games, construction is already underway for athletes’ villages, which could later be converted into affordable and social housing.

Caravan park owners and operators may see both opportunities and challenges in the government’s proposal. The increased demand for caravan accommodations could lead to business growth, as well as potential upgrades and expansions to existing parks. However, there may be concerns about budget, infrastructure, maintenance, and the impact on regular guests during this period.

Additionally, partnerships between the government and park owners could result in new initiatives, further benefiting the caravan industry. This collaboration could help ensure that the sector caters effectively to the diverse needs of both domestic and international visitors during the Commonwealth Games.

Victorian Council of Social Services chief executive Emma King emphasized the need for the government to protect vulnerable individuals during the influx of visitors. She stated that caravan parks play a critical role in providing support for people fleeing danger and homelessness in Victoria. When parks fill with tourists, officials, and workers, these vulnerable populations may be displaced.
