Boosting Regional Tourism: Victoria’s Great Outdoors and the Need for Accessible Outdoor Attractions

Victoria’s Great Outdoors, an initiative by the Andrews Labor Government, is making strides in boosting regional tourism by improving accessibility at popular outdoor attractions.

The Mount Cole State Forest’s campground, a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts, has recently undergone significant upgrades, making it more accessible to all.

The campground received a AU$410,000 upgrade, which included the addition of accessible car parking, picnic tables, and an all abilities concrete path connecting all facilities.

The northern and southern sections of the campground also saw the installation of two new dual toilets. These upgrades have transformed the space into the first fully accessible campground in a state forest in the Grampians region.

With a diverse and growing number of people visiting this popular campsite, these accessible upgrades will provide a unique and enjoyable experience for all.

The initiative is part of a broader effort by Victoria’s Great Outdoors to make it easier for Victorians to access and enjoy nature by investing $106.6 million in better walking trails, campgrounds, four-wheel drive tracks, and visitor facilities, according to the organization.

The importance of such initiatives is echoed in the broader context of outdoor accessibility. According to the United States Access Board, the development of accessibility guidelines for outdoor facilities is a crucial aspect of making outdoor experiences more inclusive. This includes trails, camping and picnic facilities, viewing areas, and beach access routes.

Moreover, organizations like Outdoors for All and the Legacy Parks Foundation are working towards improving outdoor accessibility. Independent actions, such as joining local Parks and Recreation Committees or working with trail maintenance groups, can also contribute to making outdoor spaces more accessible.

The accessibility upgrades at Mount Cole State Forest’s campground are a testament to the potential of such initiatives. By making outdoor attractions more accessible, we can ensure that everyone, including campers, hikers, and RVers, can enjoy the beauty of nature.

Victoria’s Great Outdoors is setting a precedent for other regions to follow. By investing in accessibility upgrades, they are not only boosting regional tourism but also promoting inclusivity in outdoor experiences. As more people gain access to these natural wonders, the importance of creating facilities that cater to all abilities becomes increasingly clear.
