Bear Gully Campground Closure Protects Aboriginal Heritage in Cape Liptrap Coastal Park

Bear Gully Campground (Australia), a favored destination within Cape Liptrap Coastal Park, has been provisionally closed due to concerns that ongoing camping and recreational activities might be impacting an Aboriginal site and its artifacts.

Parks Victoria (PV) made this decision after consulting with First Peoples – State Relations (FP-SR) to address potential harm to the Aboriginal cultural values present at the site.

According to a report by the Sentinel Times, PV is now collaborating with FP-SR and Traditional Owner representative groups to evaluate the situation and determine the most appropriate course of action.

This joint effort aims to ensure that all parties involved adhere to the Parks Victoria Act 2018 and Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 as they work to manage and preserve the Aboriginal cultural values at Bear Gully Campground.

“Parks Victoria is working with First Peoples – State Relations to assess potential impacts to Aboriginal cultural heritage at Bear Gully Campground. We are taking a precautionary approach to limit harm to these values, to fulfill our obligations under the Parks Victoria Act 2018 and Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006,” a spokesperson for Parks Victoria said.

In order to safeguard the site, Bear Gully Campground, including beach access through the area, will remain closed until Sunday, May 7, 2023.

PV has reached out to campers with existing bookings, offering them the option of a full refund or an alternative booking through the Parks Victoria Customer Service Centre at 13 1963.

While the current closure is expected to last until May 7, Parks Victoria will keep campers informed of any changes or extensions to the closure period. Meanwhile, campers with future bookings should stay updated on the situation and be prepared for potential changes in plans.

This closure serves as a reminder for campers and outdoor enthusiasts across Australia to respect and protect the cultural heritage of the lands they visit.

By working together, Parks Victoria, First Peoples – State Relations, and the community can ensure that Aboriginal cultural values are preserved and respected for future generations to appreciate.
