Australia’s Local Travel Surge: Fresh Numbers Reveal Big Gains for Economy

Australia’s regional tourism sector has shown remarkable resilience and growth, according to a press release highlighting the industry’s vital role in supporting local economies and job creation.

The figures reveal that 97% of regions experienced an increase in tourism’s economic value during the 2022-2023 period, with over half of these areas witnessing growth exceeding 50% compared to the previous year.

The data underscores the importance of tourism to regional communities, where it directly accounts for 6.7% of jobs, more than double the 2.9% seen in capital cities. This contrast emphasizes the sector’s role as a crucial economic driver in rural and regional Australia, providing employment opportunities and stimulating local businesses.

Several regions have emerged as standout performers in the tourism recovery. Kangaroo Island in South Australia has seen tourism revenue contribute significantly to its local economy, accounting for 27% of the region’s economic activity and 38% of all jobs on the island. Phillip Island in Victoria has also experienced substantial benefits from tourism, with the sector contributing 18% to the local economy and providing 30% of all jobs on the island.

Queensland’s Whitsundays region has seen tourism-driven growth, with the industry accounting for 12% of the local economy and 22% of all jobs. These success stories demonstrate the potential for tourism to drive economic growth and provide substantial employment opportunities in regional areas.

The Albanese Government has recognized the importance of supporting this crucial industry across Australia, particularly in regional areas. The $10 million Caravan Parks Grants Program has enabled operators to enhance their facilities and amenities, thereby attracting more visitors to regional destinations.

Furthermore, the government’s commitment to regional development is evident in the first round of the Growing Regions Program, which has allocated over $116 million in tourism-related funding for community and economic infrastructure projects across regional and rural Australia. This substantial investment aims to create long-term economic opportunities and enhance the visitor experience in regional areas.

The government’s approach aligns with its national strategy for the growth of the tourism sector, which includes specific targets for visitor spending in regional Australia. This targeted strategy recognizes the unique challenges and opportunities faced by regional tourism operators and seeks to address them through tailored support and investment.

As part of this strategy, there is a strong emphasis on encouraging Australians to explore their own country.

“I encourage Australians to continue to get out and explore our magnificent country, knowing that not only will you have a great experience, but that you are also contributing to the creation of more jobs and opportunities in our communities,” Senator the Hon Don Farrell said in the press release.
