Former Australian cricketer Michael Hussey and WA Cricket have teamed up with Airbnb to offer an exclusive glamping experience at Perth’s historic WACA Ground ahead of the first Ashes Test match between Australia and England at Optus Stadium.
From 9 a.m. AWST on November 7, cricket fans can apply through airbnb.com/WACA for the chance to spend a night on the WACA outfield.
Four guests will be selected for the free overnight stay, which includes accommodations styled with cricket memorabilia and a curated collection from Hussey’s personal archive.
Items include bats he used to score international centuries and a selection of his cricket kits, providing an immersive connection to the sport’s legacy.
The guests will watch a locally produced film on the WACA’s big screen before spending the night in a fully furnished tent featuring two single beds and a double bed.
The next morning, they will share breakfast with Hussey in the Bradman Room before heading onto the outfield for a friendly game of backyard cricket against the former Test player.
According to the West Australian, participants will also receive tickets to the sold-out first day of the Ashes Test at Optus Stadium.
“It will be a phenomenal experience for four lucky people. Get in quick,” Hussey said.
“As a kid growing up here in Perth and watching my heroes like Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh play, I just dreamt of one day being able to play on this famous ground and having my name on the scoreboard. When I did get that opportunity, I felt so lucky, and I remember my Mum and Dad and family coming down and watching me play. It just gave me so much joy. I’m eternally grateful to this place.”
WACA CEO John Stephenson said the initiative aligns with the organisation’s goal of keeping the historic ground accessible to fans.
“It’s a unique opportunity to sleep on the hallowed turf of the WACA ground and it’s a part of what we’re trying to create here,” he said. “It’s a part of our aspiration to drive customer experience at the ground when we open the redevelopment.”
For professionals in outdoor hospitality, the collaboration between Airbnb and WA Cricket illustrates how unique venue-based stays can create promotional opportunities, attract new audiences, and enhance visitor engagement through experiential tourism.
