ACT Government Advises Travelers to Take Extra Care in Parks and Reserves During the Holidays

The ACT Government advises that visitors must exercise extra caution when going to parks or reserves due to extended thunderstorms and rain forecasted.

Director for ACT Parks and Conservation Service Daniel Iglesias said extended heavy rainfall had impacted some ACT reserves and parks over the summer, which is expected to continue this weekend and potentially next week.

“We’re expecting to see more people heading out to our parks and reserves as the school holidays begin from this weekend,” Daniel Iglesias said. “Regardless of your level of experience, make sure you take extra precautions when getting out into nature as we may see further rain into already saturated catchments over the coming days.

He said that visitors of the Namadgi National Park should prepare for changes in weather conditions since it is a part of the Australian alpine area, where conditions can “change and deteriorate very quickly.”

“If you’re not completely comfortable and prepared for your trip, stay closer to home and consider coming back another day when the weather improves.”

Streams and creaks in this area are full of water and flooding can occur instantly without warning, stranding visitors unprepared. Iglesias advises them to stay away from low-lying areas to be safe.

“Take extra care around trees and other debris. Strong winds and floodwaters are dangerous and will move fallen trees unpredictably, and can even topple or uproot standing trees,” said Iglesias. “Vehicles should be well maintained with a full tank of fuel, and drivers should drive to the conditions.”

Parks, roads, and reserves closure may happen on or without notice. The Act Government suggests visiting their website or their Facebook page to remain updated on closures and advisories before traveling.
