The eco-luxury Visama Explorer tented camp in Nan province, northern Thailand, is now open for bookings ahead of its official launch in December. The camp introduces eight tented suites situated in a rural landscape of rice fields and mountains.
The development is operated by VHG Hospitality Asia, part of Bangkok-based YAANA Ventures, a group known for sustainable outdoor lodging projects.
Its portfolio includes Cardamom Tented Camp in Cambodia, Anurak Lodge in southern Thailand’s Khao Sok, and other community-based tented properties in Southeast Asia.
At the center of the new camp is the Ambalama, designed as a communal gathering place inspired by Sri Lankan traditions of resting stops for travelers.
The space serves as a venue for nightly conversations or open-air cinema screenings, alongside a bar offering cocktails. Dining is available at Monmanee, a creek-side restaurant highlighting northern Thai cuisine as well as western dishes, with a fireplace for cooler evenings.
Accommodation includes air-conditioned safari tents of 36 square meters plus an additional 12-square-meter veranda. The tents are available in Mountain View and Creek View categories and include ensuite bathrooms, private decks, and in-room amenities such as Wi-Fi, hot showers, and minibars.
“Visama exists to create exceptional places to stay in remote locations,” Willem Niemeijer, CEO and co-founder of VHG Hospitality Asia, told Travel Weekly.
“We also aim to open pathways of career development for local communities. We believe that meaningful travel is based on mutual respect and understanding. Visama Nan seeks to implement that vision.”
Beyond the tents, guests can participate in activities such as tree planting, artisan workshops, hiking, cycling, and excursions to local temples and waterfalls.
The property is accessible via an 80-minute flight from Bangkok, followed by a two-hour road transfer, with daily flights operated by Air Asia and Nok Air.
Visama Explorer Nan is offering an introductory “Opening Whisper Escape” promotion, bookable until December 31, priced at THB 4,740 (about AU$225) per night, inclusive of breakfast and dinner for two for stays beginning December 1, 2025.
Starting January 1, 2026, a “Tent & Taste” two-night package will be available at THB 6,970 (about AU$330) per night, also including breakfast and dinner for two.
For outdoor hospitality business owners, Visama Explorer Nan provides a case study in combining luxury amenities with community engagement and environmental programming.
The model demonstrates how high-comfort outdoor accommodations can appeal to international travelers while also creating opportunities for local employment and skills development in rural regions.
