Motorhome Rentals Surge in Malaysia as “Balik Kampung” Travelers Seek Flexible Alternatives

The rental of recreational vehicles (RVs) and motorhomes is experiencing a significant surge in popularity in Malaysia, particularly as travelers seek flexible options for family vacations and traditional “balik kampung” trips during festive seasons.

Mohd Fathuddin Fakri Ramli, the 26-year-old founder of RV rental firm RV Life MY, noted that demand has increased substantially as more consumers prefer the convenience of having transportation and accommodation in a single unit, according to an article by The Star.

For the current Raya period, booking activity began well before Ramadan, leaving only a few units available for rent.

This marks a rapid transformation for RV Life MY, which launched in 2022 with only one vehicle and has since expanded its fleet to 126 motorhomes.

The company’s international footprint now includes 40 units in Malaysia, 80 in Japan, and six in Indonesia.

The initial phase of the business faced challenges as the Malaysian public was largely unfamiliar with the motorhome concept.

“Some questioned whether they were suitable for use in Malaysia, or safe for long-distance travel,” Ramli told Bernama.

He credited social media content and increased exposure for helping Malaysians understand and eventually adopt the mobile lifestyle.

Beyond leisure travel, the vehicles are being utilized for specialized needs, such as transporting elderly parents for medical treatment.

The spacious interiors and comfort levels of RVs offer a more suitable environment for medical transport than conventional vehicles.

Rental rates in Malaysia typically start at RM500 per day, while high-end premium units can cost up to RM2,000 per day.

These premium motorhomes offer advanced features, including WiFi connectivity, bathrooms with water heaters, and the capacity to accommodate up to seven people.

While currently concentrated in Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Terengganu, RV Life MY plans to expand its operations to Sabah and Sarawak.

The company’s long-term goal is to place at least one rental unit in every Malaysian state to meet growing market potential.

This trend indicates a shift toward legalized commercial RV rentals and a growing middle-class interest in nomadic travel within Southeast Asia.

The rapid fleet expansion of companies like RV Life MY highlights an urgent need for standardized campground infrastructure, including reliable power hookups and waste disposal systems, to support a new generation of motorhome travelers.
