Miri Beach Glamping Resort Opens as Borneo’s First Beachfront Glamping and Motorhome Destination

Miri Beach Glamping Resort, described as Borneo’s first beachfront glamping and motorhome destination, officially opened yesterday with an event officiated by Sarawak’s Deputy Minister of Tourism, Datuk Sebastian Ting.

Located 27.5 kilometers from Miri city, the five-acre site sits on elevated coastal land overlooking the South China Sea.

The development features a variety of accommodation options, including Japanese luxury motorhomes, campervans, rooftop tents, outdoor chalets, space capsules, container homes, and traditional beach tents.

According to the Borneo Post, facilities include solar-powered lighting, modern shower amenities, ample parking for campervans, and a beachside restaurant offering seafood and local dishes.

At the launch, founder Dr. Ling Tung King, an experienced overlander who has traveled more than 500,000 kilometers across multiple countries, outlined the personal journey that led to the resort’s creation.

“Today is not just the launch of a resort – it’s the realisation of a dream that began more than a decade ago,” he said. “Miri Beach Glamping Resort is the first of its kind in Borneo. Here, you can sleep under the stars in a space capsule, wake up to the sound of waves in a beach chalet, or have a barbecue with friends and family by the sea.”

To encourage early engagement, Dr. Ling announced a five-day free stay promotion for the public, running until October 3, excluding food.

He emphasized the opportunity for urban residents to experience the natural setting, noting, “Many of our guests realise that Miri does have stunning sunsets and beautiful beachfront scenery. The temperature at night can dip to a cool 24°C, so you don’t need air-conditioning.”

In his remarks, Ting commended the development as “a bold and timely addition to Sarawak’s tourism landscape,” and praised Dr. Ling for his vision.

For industry professionals, the opening of Miri Beach Glamping Resort reflects a broader trend of diversification within Southeast Asia’s outdoor hospitality market.

By combining motorhome tourism, glamping accommodations, and eco-conscious features, the resort highlights how operators can tap into changing traveler preferences.

Demand is growing for hybrid models that blend traditional camping with innovative lodging formats, offering lessons for businesses seeking to differentiate themselves in competitive tourism markets.
