Shenton Safaris has announced the reopening of its Numbu Star Bed experience at Mwamba Bush Camp in South Luangwa, following a redesign completed after the camp’s major 2024 refurbishment.
Available exclusively to guests of Mwamba Bush Camp, the reimagined outdoor accommodation adds a luxury sleepout option to the safari operator’s portfolio, offering an immersive overnight experience in the African wilderness.

The new Numbu Star Bed is located on an open savannah approximately 15 minutes from the main camp.
The elevated structure comprises two distinct levels: a lower deck with a fire pit, dining table, and seating area suitable for private dinners or sunset drinks, and an upper deck that features a four-poster bed under a mosquito net, a plumbed toilet, a vanity, and a freestanding outdoor bathtub.
The platform is designed to offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, while maintaining the level of comfort expected by modern safari travellers.
“The Numbu Star Bed is more than a night’s sleep — it’s a sensory experience that immerses guests into the magic of the African night,” said Derek Shenton, founder and owner of Shenton Safaris.
To ensure safety, an armed scout and guide are stationed overnight in a nearby boma and remain in radio contact with guests.

According to a report published by African Travel & Tourism Association, visitors are asked to bring only essential items with them to the platform; all other belongings remain securely stored in their chalet at the main camp.
The Numbu Star Bed is now accepting reservations for the 2025 safari season. The launch aligns with a broader trend among safari and glamping operators who are responding to growing demand for nature-based accommodations that enhance the sensory and emotional aspects of outdoor stays.
For business owners in the outdoor hospitality industry, the development illustrates how luxury wilderness experiences—particularly those that balance comfort with direct exposure to the natural environment—can serve as both a brand differentiator and revenue generator.
As guest expectations evolve, offerings like the Numbu Star Bed highlight the importance of blending design, location, and experience to create lasting guest impressions.
