Great Plains, a conservation-focused African eco-tourism organization founded by National Geographic filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert, has announced plans to launch two new private-use villas near Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
The Mpala Jena Private Villas are scheduled to open in August 2025, expanding the company’s luxury accommodation offerings in the region.
Located five kilometers upstream from the existing Mpala Jena camp, the new development will feature two three-bedroom villas designed to accommodate up to six adults or four adults and three children.
The villas are being developed by owners Kevin and Shannon Lang, in collaboration with architect Julia Rotherford and interior designer Tracy Kelly.
According to a report by Hospitality Net, the design aims to retain the atmosphere of the original camp while offering a higher level of privacy and comfort for small groups and families.
Each villa will include a private main area, a swimming pool, and three riverfront suites, as well as dedicated guide and butler services.
The location was chosen for its views of the Zambezi River and its proximity to a frequented wildlife drinking area, which is often visited by zebras and impalas. The villas will overlook either a private waterhole or a tributary leading to the Zambezi River.
Inspired by architectural styles from the Puglia region of Italy, the villas feature thatched roofs, open-plan designs, and materials intended to maintain comfortable temperatures throughout the seasons.
Guests will have access to a range of activities, including private safari drives and motorboat excursions at no extra charge.
When river conditions permit, sunrise and sunset cruises aboard a historic dhow from Zanzibar will also be available. Packages for a two-night stay include airport or in-town transfers and a half-day guided tour of Victoria Falls.
Each suite offers a secluded setting with private pavilions situated above white-sand riverbanks. These areas are designed as quiet spaces for guests to relax and take in the riverside environment.
For business owners in the outdoor hospitality sector, this expansion reflects ongoing demand for high-end, exclusive-use accommodations that cater to multigenerational families and small private groups.
The Mpala Jena Private Villas may serve as a case study in blending sustainable eco-tourism with bespoke luxury.
Features such as private transport, dedicated staff, and tailored excursions are examples of how operators can enhance guest experiences while maintaining environmental and cultural integrity.
