Red Rock State Park Schedules Monthly Geology Hike as Part of 35th Anniversary Operations

Arizona State Parks scheduled a monthly guided Geology Hike at Red Rock State Park in Sedona, Arizona, set for Sunday, October 11, at 1 p.m.

The program will take participants onto park trails to discuss how the surrounding landscape around Oak Creek and Sedona developed into what is seen today.

Led by park volunteers, the hike is open to both beginners and experienced hikers, though advance reservations are required, according to an article by ad hoc news.

Official event listings place the date, time, and venue together without separate speaker schedules or formal talks, keeping the primary focus on the guided route and geological features.

Located south of Arizona State Route 89A along Red Rock Loop Road, the 286-acre nature preserve and environmental education center sits beside Oak Creek.

The park features diverse habitats including green meadows, native vegetation, manzanita, juniper, and a riparian corridor supporting local plants and wildlife.

The hike directly utilizes trails that cross this combination of creekside habitat and red-rock terrain within the preserve.

The trail network covers 8 km, or five miles, of interconnecting loops that lead toward Oak Creek and offer viewpoints of surrounding red-rock escarpments.

Facilities at the property include the Miller Visitor Center, which houses an interpretive area, a theater, a gift shop, and restrooms.

Park regulations stipulate that no pets are permitted on the premises, and swimming or wading in Oak Creek is strictly prohibited.

The event coincides with the park’s 35th year of public operation, following its initial opening and dedication on October 19, 1991, an anniversary highlighted in a report by Fox 10.

For the outdoor recreation sector, volunteer-led educational programs and structured guided hikes enhance visitor engagement and encourage responsible land stewardship across state park systems.
