Spanish Campsites Expand Air-Conditioned and Glamping Accommodation

Spanish campsites are expanding their range of higher-comfort accommodations, including bungalows, glamping units and air-conditioned spaces, as travelers increasingly look to combine outdoor stays with amenities traditionally associated with other forms of tourism.

The Spanish Federation of Campsites (FEEC) reported that many bungalows in Spain approached full occupancy during August, highlighting continued demand for fixed accommodation within the country’s camping sector. The development comes alongside growing interest in air-conditioned accommodations identified by Pitchup.com, including among travelers from other European markets.

Of the 245 Spanish campsites listed on Pitchup.com, 49 currently offer accommodations with air conditioning, representing about one in five properties on the platform. The availability is concentrated in several major camping destinations, according to Spain Travel News

Catalonia has 20 establishments offering air-conditioned accommodation, while Andalusia has 14. Combined, the two regions account for nearly 70% of the air-conditioned accommodations identified in the platform’s Spanish listings.

The availability of additional amenities also appears to be closely linked with these accommodations. Nearly nine out of 10 Spanish campsites offering air-conditioned accommodation also have an outdoor swimming pool, giving operators another way to pair climate-controlled lodging with outdoor recreation and leisure facilities.

For campground operators, the trend illustrates how accommodation mix can be used to broaden the customer base without moving entirely away from the outdoor experience.

Bungalows and glamping units can provide an alternative to traditional tent and touring pitches, while features such as air conditioning may become particularly relevant when operating in destinations that experience high summer temperatures.

The concentration of air-conditioned accommodation in Catalonia and Andalusia also points to potential differences in demand and investment across Spain’s camping markets. Operators evaluating upgrades or new accommodations may need to consider local climate, traveler expectations, seasonality and the cost of adding and operating cooling infrastructure alongside other guest amenities.

The figures also reflect a broader shift in how campsites can position themselves within the tourism market.

Rather than serving only travelers seeking traditional camping experiences, properties can offer a range of accommodation levels that allow guests to retain access to nature while having access to services and comforts associated with hotels and other lodging formats.

With bungalow occupancy reported as strong during August, the continued development of glamping and climate-controlled accommodations provides Spanish campground operators with additional options for diversifying their accommodation portfolios and responding to changing expectations around comfort during outdoor holidays.
