Volkswagen introduced the ID. California Cruise, representing the first fully electric model in the company’s California camper van series. Based on the ID.
Buzz Pro platform, the new vehicle will be available to European consumers in both short and long wheelbase configurations.
The interior features a 2-meter-long bed platform with a folding mattress situated above the folded rear seats.
Additional amenities include ventilation inserts for the front windows, blackout blinds covering all windows including the optional glass roof, and specific “California” and “Cruise” exterior badging, according to an article by Yahoo Autos and InsideEVs review.

To support overnight stays, the van incorporates a “California mode” that manages interior climate control, device charging, and lighting.
A vehicle-to-load function with a peak output of 3.6 kilowatts allows campers to power small appliances through an included “PowerSocket” adapter at the charge port.
The European package also provides an exterior camping table and chairs for outdoor use, with vehicle deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027.

While the ID. California Cruise omits traditional amenities found in other California vans—such as pop-top roofs, built-in kitchens, dedicated interior control panels, swiveling front seats, and fold-out exterior workstations—a comparable version is slated for the United States market.
Following a hiatus for the 2026 model year, Volkswagen will introduce the 2027 ID. Buzz Tourer for American consumers.
The upcoming Tourer trim mirrors many of the simplified camping capabilities seen in its European counterpart.

According to Volkswagen, the Tourer trim includes “a fold-out mattress with platform, window blinds, front window ventilation panels, an exterior table and chairs, and Overnight Mode software that adapts interior and exterior functionality to enable the vehicle to be used for overnight stays.”
The U.S. model will also offer an electrochromic roof and captain’s chairs. Official pricing for the upcoming vehicles remains undetermined.
The introduction of light-duty electric camper vans signals a growing demographic of eco-conscious weekend travelers.
As major automotive manufacturers continue to release entry-level, zero-emission campers, campground operators can capture this expanding market by increasing electric vehicle charging infrastructure and adapting site designs to accommodate tech-integrated, small-footprint setups.
