NJCOA Annual Report Highlights Last-Minute Booking Trends, Legislative Advocacy Amid Challenging Camping Season

The New Jersey Campground Owners Association (NJCOA) has released its annual report, highlighting shifting traveler behavior, ongoing legislative advocacy and member outreach as campground operators navigate a season marked by economic pressures and unpredictable weather.

In her annual message to members, Executive Director Joann DelVescio said rising fuel prices, higher costs for goods and services, and the effects of tariffs have contributed to a cautious travel market, with consumers delaying vacation decisions and changing booking habits.

“We have observed several key trends among consumers,” DelVescio wrote. “Travelers are making reservations closer to their arrival dates. Guests are booking shorter stays. Many are choosing destinations within driving distance to reduce travel expenses. Value and affordability continue to be primary considerations when travelers are planning vacations.”

Despite those challenges, DelVescio said NJCOA continues to promote camping vacations across New Jersey through consumer travel shows, advertising, social media, camping guides and other marketing initiatives designed to maintain visibility in a competitive hospitality market.

The report also outlined the association’s government affairs efforts, noting that NJCOA has monitored more than 100 pieces of legislation during the past year that could affect campground operators and the state’s tourism industry.

DelVescio represented the association at local, state and national legislative meetings while advocating for policies affecting the outdoor hospitality sector.

Among the measures being tracked are bills addressing single-use utensils and condiments, credit card surcharges, compliance extensions for businesses and notification requirements regarding pets in seasonal rental units.

“It is critical for campground operators to know their elected officials and maintain communication with them to help policy makers better understand our industry,” DelVescio said. “NJCOA members can count on their association being steadfast in advocating on their behalf for policies that recognize the unique needs of New Jersey’s camping industry.”

The association also reported record participation at its Campground Conference, which attracted 75 registrants from 13 states representing 38 campgrounds and 39 exhibitors. More than 60 people attended the Fall Tour hosted by Four Seasons Family Campground, while 100,000 camping and vacation guides were printed for distribution throughout North America.

Data from guide requests submitted through NJCOA’s website showed beaches, historic sites, hiking, fishing and boardwalks ranked among the most popular visitor interests.

Adults age 60 and older accounted for 44% of guide requests, followed by those ages 50 to 60 at 25% and ages 40 to 50 at 19%. RV sites were the most requested accommodation type, followed by cabins and cottages, tent camping, seasonal sites and park models or specialty rentals.

DelVescio said visits with campground operators revealed that weather-related disruptions, including storms, flooding, extreme heat, poor air quality and power outages, have created operational challenges.

She also said some campgrounds reported fewer extended stays from Canadian visitors, with shorter domestic trips helping offset cancellations.

“It’s been a wild summer because of weather,” DelVescio said, adding that operators have continued adapting to changing conditions while preparing to market late summer and fall camping opportunities across the state.
