North Yorkshire Water Park has introduced a new accommodation offering with the launch of two helicopter glamping pods, expanding its lodging portfolio ahead of the current tourism season.
The new units, created from decommissioned aircraft, are now available for bookings and represent a continued effort by the park to diversify its on-site accommodations and attract a broader range of visitors.
The helicopters, identified as Westland Sea King models ZE369 and XZ589, were originally built for the Royal Air Force and used in search and rescue operations across the United Kingdom.
After decades of operational service, the aircraft have been repurposed into overnight stays while retaining elements of their original structure and design. The adaptation reflects a growing trend within the outdoor hospitality sector to reuse distinctive or historic assets as experiential lodging.
According to The Scarborough News, each unit has been fitted with a double bed and a set of bunk beds, positioning the accommodation for both couples and families. The cockpit area has been converted into a dining space, while some controls and switches remain accessible, preserving aspects of the aircraft’s original function.
Additional amenities include a microwave, toaster, kettle, and refrigerator, as well as access to an outdoor gravel landing pad with seating.
The helicopter pods complement the park’s existing accommodation mix, which includes camping pods, a traditional campsite, and lodge-style lodging. The development aligns with a broader industry movement toward offering differentiated and experience-led stays that can command premium pricing and extend guest dwell time.
North Yorkshire Water Park continues to operate a range of on-site activities, including water-based attractions such as its inflatable aqua park, along with land-based options like archery and ziplining.
The integration of distinctive accommodations with activity-driven destinations is increasingly being used by operators to create bundled experiences and drive occupancy across shoulder seasons.
For business owners in the outdoor hospitality, glamping, and RV sectors, the introduction of themed accommodations such as converted helicopters highlights an opportunity to repurpose unconventional assets to create marketable experiences.
This approach may appeal to guests seeking novelty and can serve as a differentiator in competitive regional markets, particularly where traditional accommodation types are widely available.
