Nebraska Approves $2.6 Million in Grants for Outdoor Recreation Projects Statewide

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved more than $2.6 million in Land and Water Conservation Fund Stateside Assistance Program grants during its meeting Jan. 23 in Lincoln, directing federal dollars toward outdoor recreation improvements in communities across the state. The funding, provided by the U.S. Department of the Interior through federal oil and gas leases on the Outer Continental Shelf, will support swimming pool replacements, park revitalization efforts and new sports facilities in seven Nebraska communities.

The City of Curtis and Auburn each received the largest awards at $600,000 apiece. Curtis will use its grant to replace the community swimming pool, while Auburn plans swimming pool improvements and revitalization of multi-sport courts at Auburn Legion Park. Spalding secured $542,255 to remodel its swimming pool, rounding out the three largest grants focused on aquatic facility upgrades.

La Vista received $340,410 to revitalize two parks, while Beatrice was awarded $256,665 to develop pickleball courts at Chautauqua Park. The City of Neligh secured $210,000 for development at two river parks, and Stamford received $96,666 for improvements at City Park. The variety of approved projects demonstrates the broad definition of outdoor recreation qualifying for state support.

When municipalities improve parks, pools and outdoor facilities, overall destination appeal increases, which can drive higher visitation to surrounding areas. Private campground and RV park operators in communities receiving grants may see increased visitor traffic as enhanced recreation infrastructure draws more travelers to these regions.

The LWCF Stateside Assistance Program specifically targets acquisition, development and renovation of public outdoor recreation sites. These investments aim to enhance public access to quality outdoor recreation opportunities throughout Nebraska.

Several funding pathways exist for private campground and RV park owners seeking capital for improvements. State tourism development programs in various states offer matching grants for projects that increase overnight visitation capacity. USDA Rural Development programs provide financing options for recreational businesses operating in rural areas. Private operators can contact local economic development agencies to explore opportunities that may support their own facility improvements.
