The Ontario government is investing more than CA$82 million over four years to modernize infrastructure at beaches and campgrounds managed by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission (SLPC).

The funding supports the SLPC’s multi-year revitalization project, with a focus on Mille Roches Beach and Campground.

Planned upgrades include the construction of new environmentally friendly facilities designed to improve the visitor experience and operational efficiency.

“Every summer, Ontario’s lakes, rivers, beaches, and parkland attract millions of domestic and international tourists,” Tourism Minister Stan Cho said, as reported Link2Build on August 5.

“Our investment will help ensure the St. Lawrence Parks Commission has the modern infrastructure it needs to improve its visitor experience and continue welcoming locals and guests from near and far for generations to come,” Cho added.

In addition to improving visitor-facing amenities, the funding will advance the second phase of the SLPC’s Septic, Washrooms and Drinking Water Revitalization Project. This initiative includes the first septic system upgrades in more than 60 years.

The infrastructure work includes connecting drinking water and wastewater systems to the nearby townships of South Stormont and South Dundas, decommissioning outdated septic systems and wells, and building new canteen, change room, and washroom facilities at Mille Roches Beach and Campground.

The upgrades aim to strengthen environmental stewardship, lower operational expenses, and enhance the long-term sustainability of the SLPC’s assets while supporting regional employment.

“The Ontario government’s investment is crucial to our promise to modernize the essential infrastructure within our parks,” said Bob Runciman, chair of the St. Lawrence Parks Commission.

“With the support of the province, we’re improving our parks, attractions and facilities that have long been gathering places for families and communities, ensuring they remain accessible, welcoming and sustainable for future generations,” Runciman added.

The announcement follows a previous investment of nearly CA$10.5 million in 2021, which included CA$3.1 million directed to the revitalization of Brown’s Bay, another popular site along the corridor.
