The Hayward National Golf Course in Sawyer County, Wisconsin is being sought to be converted into an RV park for the third time in many years, according to a report.
The most recent rezone and conditional use permit (CUP) request for the land situated within the towns of Bass Lake and Hayward, comes from Pinewood Properties LLC of Hayward for a 197-site RV park.
The rezone and CUP were already OKd by the towns’ boards. The proposal is scheduled to be heard by the Sawyer County Zoning Committee on March 18.
The new rezone request asks that most of the land be converted from Agricultural 1 (A-1), with 5.5 acres staying Commercial 1 (C-1) land, into Residential/Recreational 2 (RR-2) land, where an RV campground would be one of the conditional uses.
If approved, Adam Bodenschatz, the applicants’ representative, said that the project would be completed in three to five years. He added that an engineering company would design stormwater retention plans, wetland delineation, and the establishment of a buffer zone to the nearby Spring Creek.
Concerning traffic, Bodenschatz said the campground would be seasonal, suggesting that industry statistics show that most campgrounds are only at 30% capacity on weekdays, with most traffic being seen on weekends.
He stated that the aim would be to help make the old golf course “more appealing,” and pointed out that there is a huge demand for RV campgrounds with more than 500,000 RVs manufactured last year, but just 15,000 new campsites to accommodate the demand.
