Mount Rainier National Park Lifts Fire Ban

Mount Rainier National Park (Washington) has lifted its parkwide fire ban.

In a September 16 release, the National Park Service said that campfires would be allowed at the park’s three campgrounds, the Ohanapecosh Campground, the Cougar Rock Campground, and the White River Campground.

The fire ban was implemented to reduce the risk of human-caused wildland fire during extreme weather conditions, poor air quality from wildfire smoke, and increased concerns about nearby wildfire activity.

As per the NPS, fires must be fully contained within the closed grate. They also encourage parkgoers not to burn trash and not leave fires unattended. They also urge people not to collect branches, twigs, and cones to create a fire.

Currently, there is no wildfire activity within Mountain Rainer National Park. However, the Goat Rocks Fire continues to burn outside the park’s southeast corner.

The Goat Rocks Fire continues to burn 1.5 miles northeast of the town of Packwood, Washington, in and around the Goat Rocks Wilderness area.

According to the recent fire updates from the Incident Information System, firefighters are continuously working to thin and remove fuels along roads to act as fuel breaks and remove the fuels cut from around structures in the Timberline, Goat Rocks, and High Valley communities.

According to its website, Mount Rainier is the most glaciated peak in the contiguous U.S.A., spawning five major rivers.
