Virginia State Parks Set to Open Reservations for Hunting Opportunities to Control Deer Population

Reservations for hunting opportunities at Virginia State Parks will open on September 3, according to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. The parks offer hunting opportunities each year in select locations, and managed hunts are considered an essential tool in “managing the deer population and maintaining herd health.” Hunters are asked to comply with specific harvest guidelines to support these conservation efforts.

In a press release, a new hunting area will be available this year near Staunton River State Park, at a site formerly known as Falkland Farms. This addition expands the range of hunting options available to participants.

All hunters participating in these managed hunts must adhere to the strict terms and conditions outlined by the state parks. Requirements include guidelines on weapon types, the amount of blaze orange clothing required, and the completion of a mandatory safety course.

Information regarding hunt dates, maps, and detailed hunt packets is also available on the Virginia State Parks website. Prospective hunters are encouraged to review all details to ensure compliance with park regulations.

General rules for hunting in Virginia State Parks emphasize that both hunting and camping are permitted only in designated areas. Additionally, Virginia game laws apply throughout these designated hunting zones. Hunting within 100 yards of any state park buildings or roads is strictly prohibited.

Reservations for hunts can be made online through the Virginia State Parks reservation system. A $15 reservation fee applies to all hunts. To reserve a hunting date and location, participants must have an email address to create an account. It is recommended to set up this account well in advance of the reservation period to avoid delays.

The first hunt reservation period begins at 9 a.m. on September 3, with additional hunts opening individually by park throughout the month.
