New Developments at Chickahominy Riverfront Park: A Blend of Nature and Comfort

Chickahominy Riverfront Park, a beloved natural retreat in James City, Virginia is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Recent and upcoming enhancements are set to redefine the park experience, blending outdoor activities with modern comforts.

According to an article by The Virginia Gazette, the park’s new fishing pier, unveiled in November following a swift five-month renovation, replaces its 1970s predecessor. This modern structure not only withstands high tides but is also accessible to all, including those with disabilities.

Equipped with solar lighting and a fish cleaning table, it invites anglers 24/7, free of charge. The community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive, with the pier becoming a daily hub for fishing enthusiasts, regardless of the season’s chill.

In collaboration with the Williamsburg Boat Club, the park is also developing a rowing center. This initiative will support the club’s expanding program and William & Mary’s rowing activities

The conceptual plan includes a new boathouse, enhanced water access for non-motorized boats, and improved facilities for handicapped and adaptive rowing. With $55,000 already raised towards a $200,000 goal, the project aims for completion between late 2027 and early 2028.

Other ongoing projects include replacing the park’s well, due for completion in early 2025, and constructing a new RV storage area, set to open in April 2024. This area will offer a screened, spacious parking solution for long-term RV storage.

Adding a touch of luxury to the rustic setting, the park introduced six glamping tents along Gordon Creek.

These tents, equipped with hotel-quality beds, air conditioning, heating, and other amenities, offer a comfortable outdoor experience. Open year-round, they have quickly become a popular choice for visitors seeking a blend of nature and comfort.

A new paved multi use trail is also in the works, expected to open between late 2026 and early 2027. This trail will connect to the Virginia Capital Trail, offering scenic views along the Chickahominy River and Gordon Creek.

The park’s shoreline stabilization project, completed in 2022, established living shorelines along the river and creek, further enhancing the park’s natural beauty and sustainability.

These developments at Chickahominy Riverfront Park not only enhance its appeal but also contribute to the region’s growing reputation as a destination for both outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a comfortable retreat in nature.

The blend of modern amenities with the park’s natural beauty creates a unique experience, attracting a diverse range of visitors and solidifying the park’s status as a cherished community asset.
