Zion National Park’s South Campground has been closed to the public to commence a comprehensive rehabilitation project. The National Park Service (NPS) has initiated improvements to enhance the visitor experience and preserve the area’s natural beauty.
The project, fueled by federal funding, is set to modernize the campground’s infrastructure, focusing on essential amenities and environmental conservation. The renovation includes the installation of new bathrooms, modern drinking water systems, and an improved sewer infrastructure.
Enhancements to the campground’s stormwater drainage system are also planned. These improvements aim to manage runoff effectively and reduce the environmental impact during heavy rains. Additionally, the project will see the upgrade of individual campsites, making them more accessible and user-friendly.
As part of the rehabilitation, the NPS plans to introduce new food storage boxes. These installations are designed to protect wildlife and enhance visitor safety by minimizing the risks associated with food storage in the wild.
A significant addition to the campground will be a new visitor structure. This facility will serve as a hub for park guests to interact with rangers, gather information, and obtain wilderness permits for activities like canyoneering and backpacking.
The rehabilitation effort includes an ecological aspect, with the removal of non-native and potentially hazardous trees. In their place, the park will plant native species, promoting local biodiversity and ecological balance.
Zion National Park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh emphasized the importance of the project, stating that it reflects a commitment to improving visitor facilities and conserving the park’s natural resources. The project is supported by the Great American Outdoors Act – Legacy Restoration Fund, a federal initiative that allocates funds for the enhancement of national park infrastructures.
Passed in 2020, the Great American Outdoors Act provides up to $1.3 billion annually for five years, allowing the National Park Service to improve facilities and services across the U.S. national parks system.
The South Campground at Zion has a long history, serving visitors since the 1920s. However, most of its infrastructure has not been significantly updated since the 1960s, highlighting the need for the current rehabilitation efforts.
As per a KTNV report, the timeline for the completion of the construction and the reopening of the campground has not been established. Park officials have stated that the work will be comprehensive and are focused on ensuring long-term benefits for visitors.
