As Zion National Park transitions into winter, the National Park Service (NPS) has announced changes to shuttle schedules and campground availability. Visitors planning to visit during Thanksgiving weekend and beyond should be prepared for crowds and delays.
According to a press release, long waits are expected at shuttle stations, entrance points, and trailheads. Traffic congestion will also impact Springdale and park areas.
The fall shuttle service will end on Sunday, Dec. 1, and private vehicles will have access to the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive from Dec. 2 through Dec. 19. Visitors are advised to expect limited parking availability, with potential temporary closures of Zion Canyon Scenic Drive when parking is full. The NPS recommends adjusting plans and utilizing alternate parking areas if necessary.
From Friday, Dec. 20 through Sunday, Dec. 29, the holiday shuttle service will be in effect. During this period, private vehicles will be prohibited on the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. If parking at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center is full, visitors should park in Springdale. The holiday shuttle service will conclude on Dec. 29, after which private vehicles will again be permitted to access the scenic drive starting Dec. 30.
The NPS will resume shuttle service in the spring of 2025. According to NPS, specific dates will be provided when available.
Watchman Campground remains open year-round, with reservations available through www.recreation.gov. Lava Point Campground is closed for the season, and South Campground is temporarily closed for construction.
The Zion Canyon Visitor Center will also be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, while the Kolob Canyons Visitor Center will operate from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., reopening from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Additionally, wilderness permit desk hours will be adjusted for Thanksgiving weekend. The Zion Canyon Wilderness Desk will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Starting Dec. 1, these hours will remain the same.
