Abilene City Council Welcomes Proposed RV Park Near Lake Fort Phantom Hill

Abilene City Council in Texas approved the development of a new RV park near Lake Fort Phantom Hill, according to an Abilene Report News report. The proposed RV park will be situated on a 25.44-acre parcel located at 9017 West Lake Road and Collet Road, approximately one mile from the lake.

Abilene City and parks showcase unique outdoor activities that cater to enthusiasts of both land and water-based adventures. On land, visitors have the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities, including camping, hiking, geocaching, bird watching, and cycling or horseback riding.

According to the report, Cedric De Bourbon-Poisson, the landowner and project proponent, explained the RV park would attract new visitors to the area. He outlined a modest initial plan for 40 sites, with the possibility of expanding to 60 spaces.

De Bourbon-Poisson highlighted his commitment to environmental stewardship by dedicating 7 acres of the property to a wildflower and butterfly meadow, aiming to create a nature preserve. The new RV park is expected to align with the area’s Very Low Residential Zoning requirements, proposing a density well below the maximum allowed, with 60 units spread across 25 acres.

Despite the project’s approval, it has not been without its detractors. A local resident, living near the proposed site, voiced concerns at the City Council meeting. He criticized Lake Fort Phantom Hill as unattractive and expressed fears that an RV park could exacerbate issues of noise and litter.

The proposed RV park plans to offer amenities including a dog park, playground, garden, pool, and butterfly observatory, with a 50-foot buffer zone from Collet Road to preserve existing mature trees.

In the city, water-based activities at Abilene State Park are inviting, with swimming, fishing, and boating options. The park’s swimming pool offers a refreshing retreat during the summer months. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the natural setting by swimming in the lake.

Abilene State Park is equipped with numerous picnic sites nestled under the shade of trees, complemented by recreational facilities such as a sand volleyball court, horseshoe pit, and expansive open areas for various activities.

For those looking to explore the park by boat, canoe, and kayak rentals are available via a vending machine near the lake, ensuring visitors have easy access to watercraft for their adventures on Lake Abilene.
