Smaller South Carolina Areas Can Apply for Grants to Boost State Tourism

Small South Carolina communities now have the chance to take part in an initiative designed to draw visitors to undiscovered parts of the state.

As per a report, the Undiscovered South Carolina grant program was designed to boost tourism in the rural and smaller areas of the state, Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Director Duane Parrish said.

The grant amount can range from $50,000 to $200,000.

Parrish stated that many smaller cities in the state lack the money needed to develop tourism industry of their own. Therefore, the grant is likely to spur tourism in these smaller, less developed areas.

“Charleston can afford bluestone sidewalks, whereas Bamberg cannot. That’s the best way I can kind of surmise it. It’s intended for those areas to draw more tourists, draw more dollars and create economic development in a community that otherwise may not have as much as other cities do,” Parrish said.

As per Undiscovered SC’s website, the grant is comprised of towns, cities, and counties that often lack the individual resources to reach their potential as travel destinations.

The Undiscovered SC grant program is designed to help communities realize their full tourism potential by investing in publicly-owned tourism attraction projects that, once completed, will generate increased visitation and visitor spending.

Through the Undiscovered SC program, SCPRT will assist in the creation or expansion of viable tourism products with the potential to add value to their communities.

The grants can help cover the implementation of existing plans and the expansion or enhancement of existing tourism products.
