The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is encouraging residents to step into the New Year with fresh air, scenic trails, and a focus on health and wellness through its annual First Day Hikes program according to an article by WKBN.
This initiative is part of the nationwide First Day Hikes in America’s State Parks. First Day Hikes, a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks, invites individuals and families to kick off the New Year by getting outdoors.
On January 1st, hundreds of free, guided hikes will take place in all 50 states, offering participants the opportunity to explore state parks while boosting their health.
“Beginning the year with a First Day Hike is more than just a fitness activity; it’s about reconnecting with nature, and making lasting memories with family and friends,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz.
“With trails across our state parks offering something for everyone, it’s the perfect way to celebrate Ohio’s natural beauty,” Mary added.
Last year, nearly 55,000 people took part in the event, collectively hiking more than 133,000 miles across the country. The event aims to inspire people of all ages to embrace nature and start the year with a healthy, active outing.
Locally, Mosquito Lake State Park in Bazetta will host a 3-4 mile hike on January 1, starting at 10 a.m. Participants are invited to meet in the campground parking lot and enjoy a scenic walk along Beaver Trail.
ODNR recommends hikers dress warmly in layers, cover exposed areas, and bring water and snacks to stay comfortable during the journey.
To commemorate their participation, hikers will receive a special Winter Hike program sticker, available while supplies last.
For those interested in exploring other First Day Hike locations across Ohio, a full list of options is available on the ODNR website.
This annual tradition provides an excellent opportunity for individuals and families to connect with nature, prioritize wellness, and explore Ohio’s state parks, making it a perfect start to the New Year.
