The Mt. Gilead KOA Holiday in Ohio has been named Kampgrounds of America’s (KOA) Campground of the Year for 2025, an accolade recognizing exceptional quality and service in outdoor hospitality.
The announcement highlighted the achievements of the campground, owned and operated by Chip and Bambi Hanawalt. This award is the highest in the KOA system.
The Hanawalts’ journey into the campground business began in 2000 when they purchased a campground in Columbus, Ohio. In 2017, they joined the KOA network, selling their original property to embark on developing a new facility in Mt. Gilead.
Located 40 miles north of Columbus, this 150-acre campground opened during the July Fourth weekend of 2020, navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The site blends green spaces with modern amenities, creating a welcoming environment for campers.
The family’s involvement in the campground is a cornerstone of its success. With their children and grandchildren actively participating, the Hanawalts have fostered a family-operated legacy. Their daughter, Haley Hanawalt, who has been involved in campground life since childhood, plays a pivotal role in daily operations. “Joining the KOA system has been the greatest decision for our business,” she noted, emphasizing the brand’s support and resources.
Since opening, the Mt. Gilead KOA Holiday has undergone significant enhancements, reflecting the Hanawalts’ dedication to improving guest experiences. Additions include walking and biking trails, volleyball and basketball courts, expanded bathhouses, and a driving range. These upgrades aim to offer a diverse range of activities for visitors, ensuring a memorable stay.
Further investments have included the addition of unique Paw Pen sites, a 24-hour laundry facility, and new deluxe cabins. In 2023, a Campground of the Future Grant from KOA enabled the introduction of a KOA Signature Site, featuring upscale amenities such as a putting green, bar, and washer and dryer.
According to a press release, KOA President and CEO Toby O’Rourke commended the Hanawalts for their dedication, stating, “Their unwavering commitment and passion for outdoor hospitality serves as a beacon for us all. We are immensely proud of their journey and visionary approach to crafting campgrounds that welcome families and bridge generations.”
