Wilson County Campground Faces Closure

A Wilson County campground in North Carolina, a site for recreational activities and a haven for RV dwellers since the early 2000s at Buckhorn Veterans Park, is facing closure, according to a WRAL News report.

The park, known for its serene environment and proximity to a nearby reservoir, transitioned in 2015 to accommodate individuals seeking to park their RVs, campers, or trailers on a more permanent basis.

Beyond the trails, North Carolina parks provide ample opportunities for camping, allowing visitors to extend their stay and fully embrace the tranquility. The state’s extensive network of rivers, lakes, and coastal waters invites anglers, kayakers, and canoeists to explore and enjoy the aquatic environment.

The county’s enforcement action stems from two primary issues: the campground’s size, which falls short of the required 10 acres by approximately four acres, and the prohibition against hosting full-time residents, except the campground manager or owner. These regulations have left residents and the park’s owners in a difficult position.

People who are frequently at the park expressed frustration upon learning about the impending closure. The sentiment of losing a familial community was echoed by other residents.

According to the report, the closure was not a voluntary decision but a consequence of legal and regulatory challenges. In 2022, Wilson County deemed the campground’s operation unlawful due to the lack of a proper permit, a decision that was upheld in January 2024 after an appeal by the park’s management was rejected.

In response to the situation, Wilson County expressed its willingness to allow the current residents to remain temporarily, provided they are actively seeking alternative housing.

In North Carolina, the diverse landscape, ranging from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic coastline, provides an ideal backdrop for a wide array of outdoor activities, making it a destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Among these, hiking trails in North Carolina’s state parks are particularly noteworthy, offering routes that cater to all levels of experience.

Meanwhile, kayaking and canoeing offer peaceful yet exhilarating ways to navigate the scenic waterways. Mountain biking and rock climbing are yet other avenues through which adventurers can experience the rugged beauty of North Carolina’s landscapes.
