Wilderness Cove Campground: A New Destination for Camping, Glamping, and Adventures

Wilderness Cove Campground may be a new player in the camping industry, but the Saluda, North Carolina park is already proving to be an outdoor recreation destination, with various recreation opportunities to be had on-site.

Andrew Garcia and Benjamin Cohen, managing partners at Outdoor Venture Partners, acquired the property in November 2021. Since then, they have brought the campground to life through improvements to amenities and the addition of sites, aiming to make camping at Wilderness Cove an enjoyable experience.

“We’ve kind of blended real estate and outdoor recreation, and it’s something we’re super excited about,” Garcia told Modern Campground.

While the new owners kept the water sports aspect of the site, Garcia said they saw the location’s potential and invested in growing and building out the campground.

“It was a beautiful piece of property in a beautiful location, and it just really needed a little TLC,” he said.

When Wilderness Cove opened for business in June 2021, campers were treated to various outdoor recreation opportunities, such as access to 18,000 acres of game preserve, hiking trails, water sports, and camping.

For the 2023 season, guests will have more accommodation options to choose from. In the upcoming season, the campground will have primitive camping, RV camping, glamping, and tiny home offerings for nightly, weekly, and monthly stays.

Campers seeking a rustic camping experience can choose from ten primitive tent sites, while those new to camping can book one of the ten glamping sites.

Each glamping tent is placed on a wooden deck and comes with furniture, internet, power, and water, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in nature while still not being without creature comforts.

Campers looking for a home away from home can book the deluxe cottage, which has electric, running water, an en suite bathroom, and more. Bigger families, meanwhile, can stay in a single-family home with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a porch, and utilities like water and electricity.

There are also two rustic river cottages available for rent for those who are not quite ready to sleep in a tent. These structures are built over the river and have electricity as well as water available nearby.

For RVers, Garcia said that they are currently installing four RV pads for the upcoming season. Two of the sites will have full hookups, while the other two will have water and electricity.

In addition to the accommodations and experiences at Wilderness Cove, the more adventurous type of camper can find a new and exciting way to explore the river through bellyaking (kayaking or paddling on your belly). Rentals are available on-site for the special kayak, as well as standard kayaks and tubes.

Moreover, with a fully up-and-running camp store and a new skoolie food truck on the way, campers can find everything they need and replenish their energy without leaving the property.

Still, Wilderness Cove is not just about on-site activities. Garcia said they can be a base camp for visitors exploring the local area. Nearby are wineries, breweries, and restaurants for a taste of a getaway to remember.

As it upholds a solid commitment to providing a memorable camping experience for every kind of camper, the campground is preparing a new batch of improvements to the property for the 2023 season.

“We kind of want to be whatever folks need us to be,” he said. He continued to say that Wilderness Cove strives to accommodate adventurers that want to visit and spend the full day on a trail or kayaking, as well as glampers who just want to sit by the fire outside their glamping tent and read a book.

“[W]e want to try and cater to each of those segments, and I think that’s what we’re going for, and I think the experience we’re rolling out this year will do a pretty good job of that,” he said.

With so much to explore and do, Wilderness Cove Campground is a must-visit destination when in Saluda.
