Rowan County Set for Economic Uplift with New General RV Dealership

In a significant development for Rowan County, North Carolina, a RV dealership and service center is set to open its doors to customers in Fall 2024.

The facility, located off Interstate 85 near Salisbury, is expected to bolster the local economy through job creation, increased tourism, and a boost to the RV industry.

According to an article by WBTV, last week, county leaders, economic development officials, and representatives of General RV  confirmed the project.

Scott Shelton, vice-president of the Rowan EDC, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “This is a great thing for the county. We’re not just talking about the number of jobs, but also the quality of the jobs and the investment.”

General RV, the nation’s largest family-owned RV dealership, plans to break ground in mid-August. The proposed 71,000-square-foot facility at the end of Ritchie Road will overlook I-85. With over 30 service bays, including a six-bay body shop, and space to house 700 RVs, the dealership is poised to become a significant player in the region’s RV industry.

Shelton expressed confidence in the area’s ability to support such a business, citing the quality of available workforce.

The dealership is expected to create more than 150 full-time jobs with an average salary of $65,000. Additionally, the construction and development of the site are projected to generate 66 indirect and induced jobs within the community.

However, the project’s impact extends beyond job creation. “Having customers who aren’t familiar with Rowan County in our community while their RV is getting worked on or shopping for an RV means they’re shopping in our stores, dining in our restaurants. This is another way to spread the good word about Rowan County,” Shelton said.

Loren Baidas, president of General RV, echoed Shelton’s enthusiasm. Being in North Carolina allows us to introduce our passion for RVing to this region of the country. Our high-quality service will provide more accessibility for our new and existing customers,” he said.

County Commission Chairman Greg Edds highlighted the potential for increased tourism. He noted that RV owners often explore local shops, indulge in local eats, and seek out local camping options while their vehicle is being serviced.

While the project promises significant economic benefits, it’s important to consider potential challenges. The environmental impact of the construction and operation of the facility, potential traffic congestion due to increased tourism, and the impact on local businesses that may compete with the new dealership are factors that need to be addressed.

The dealership represents a $25 million investment in real property improvements and equipment in Rowan County. This development is a testament to the growth potential of the RV industry in the region and the commitment of stakeholders to contribute to the local economy.
