Proposed Burke County Glamping Development Won’t Push Forward

A proposed glamping development at a county park near Lake James (North Carolina) has fallen through.

According to a report, in a Burke County Board of Commissioners pre-agenda meeting, County Manager Bryan Steen told commissioners that the project, Glamping Lake James, hasn’t progressed as anticipated.

In May 2021, the commissioners approved a lease agreement with Glamping Lake James LLC for glamping at the county park at Lake James.

The agreement called for a 25-year lease for 12.5 to 15 acres at 1025 Eagle’s Nest Way, Morganton.

Glamping Lake James LLC proposed the construction of 15 to 30 glamping structures on the site and a dock, access road, parking, and utilities.

Steen said that the county’s staffers attended numerous meetings with the developer and informed him of the things that had to be accomplished and that the developer had reached a certain point, possibly financial, where he was not capable of meeting the requirements.

Steen stated that county staffers and the developer had agreed to end the agreement.

The commissioners will decide at their monthly meeting on April 19 if they want to cancel the agreement or give a refund to the developer of $3,753 in rental fee payment.
