New York State Parks Releases Proposed Design For Crow’s Nest

New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation released its renderings of the proposed entire Crow’s Nest trail would look as, starting from starting at the Prospect Point viewing area in Niagara Falls State Park down to the Niagara Gorge below.

The renderings depict a complete route, with the brand new pathway running alongside huge boulders that lead to a spot where visitors have a great view of the American waterfalls. The path then leads to a staircase shown across the gorge’s wall.

Angela Berti, the marketing and public relations manager of New York State Parks, said that the park’s visitors currently take through the Maid of the Mist and wander along the existing trail called the Crow’s Nest trail to chill before returning as the only alternative currently of climbing and descending the gorge is via the elevator located in the Niagara Falls Observatory Tower.

“It’s going to be a really good non-mechanical means in and out of the gorge,” Berti stated, “because right now it’s elevators, and if something happens, there’s no way out.”

The park’s plans were announced in September when Congressman Brian Higgins announced the National Park Service awarded the park $2.5 million in funding through the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

The total construction cost ranges between $5 and $6 million, according to a report by The Niagara Gazette.

From beginning to end, the entire process is expected to continue for the next two years. Then, the announcement and the awarding of contracts for construction are expected to occur during the spring and summer of 2023.

Construction of the Upper Stairs will start in the fall of 2023 and will be completed with the remainder of the trail to be constructed from the spring until the 2024’s fall.

Railing construction will begin in the spring of 2025, and an opening date is scheduled to be Memorial Day 2025. The construction will also be prepared to prevent ice build-up in winter months and minimize the impact to park operations and visitors.

Berti said they put a lot of effort into ensuring that the path blends into the natural environment and believes that the people will love it.
