Valle Grande District To Receive Infrastructure Improvements As Proposed By Valles Caldera

Valles Caldera National Preserve (New Mexico) has prepared an environmental assessment to analyze impacts associated with proposed infrastructure improvements in the park’s Valle Grande District.

These improvements are intended to enhance recreational opportunities, accessibility, and protection of the park’s natural and cultural values. Comments on the project can be submitted by November 9, 2022, according to a news release.

“We’re excited to make Valles Caldera more accessible and welcoming to all. These proposed infrastructure improvements are an important step in that direction,” said Park Superintendent Jorge Silva-Bañuelos.

The park proposes to construct and renovate infrastructure within the park’s Cabin District located on the western side of the Valle Grande, including new parking areas, public electric vehicle charging stations, accessibility modifications to the ranger station, and interpretive walking trails.

Near the entrance station, two miles from the main entrance gate, the improvements include a modified traffic pattern directing vehicles to a new entrance booth, accessibility modifications to the entrance station building and gates, and upgrades to existing trailheads.

A full list of modifications and improvements is described in the environmental assessment.

Many of the improvements would be constructed so that they could be retained, removed, relocated, or modified in accordance with future planning decisions being evaluated by the park.

View project information and submit written comments using the Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) system and search for “Valles Caldera Interim Infrastructure Improvements Project (106210).”
