Kootenai National Forest in Montana announced a series of temporary closures at recreational sites and forest roads to accommodate upgrades and repairs, including one washed-out road from December’s flooding.
The Timberlane Campground in the Libby Ranger District will be closed for the entire 2026 season to allow for improvements.
The site is currently unavailable for reservation on recreation.gov, and a formal closure will begin once construction operations start. The upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to maintain and improve visitor facilities.
On the Three Rivers Ranger District, Forest Service Road #384, also known as Spar Lake Road, is closed to motorized vehicles due to flood damage from December 2025.
The closure begins at the Whoopie Creek bridge near mile post 18 and continues to the road’s terminus. Non-motorized access, including walking and biking, remains open, allowing continued access to trailheads at the end of the road.
The closure is necessary because the road is too unstable to safely support vehicles.
According to an article published by The Western News on February 20, the Rexford Bench Campground and boat launch on the Rexford Ranger District is also closed temporarily while crews replace the asphalt boat ramp with concrete.
The closure applies to Campground Road #7940 and the adjacent launch area, and is intended to ensure public safety during construction operations.
While Timberlane Campground will remain closed for the 2026 season, visitors can consider several private campgrounds in the Libby area as alternatives.
Two-Bit Outfit RV Park, at 17 Two Bit Circle, offers shaded RV and tent sites with full hookups, free Wi-Fi, and on-site laundry in a quiet, convenient location near town.
About 15 minutes from Timberlane, Woodland RV Park provides forested campsites with power, water, and sewer connections, as well as private restrooms, hot showers, and a communal fire ring for guests.
