Buffalo Jump State Park Kicks Off the New Year with a Hike

Montana’s Buffalo Jump State Park greeted the new year with a hike, a tradition that most state parks have done in the country.

The state park, only some miles west of the Great Falls, has breathtaking scenery and a history that goes back hundreds of years, according to a report by 3KRTV Great Falls.

Native Americans led bison over the mile-long cliff. From the top, hikers can view the Rocky Moutain Front, the Missouri River Vallet, and the High Plains’s buttes and grasslands.

The state park’s website stated the bison jump site is a mile-long sandstone cliff with the remains of the drive lines on top and up to 18ft. of buffalo bones packed together below.

Besides the scenery and storied history, the state park also has an interpretive trail, picnic tables, and a town of black-tailed prairie dogs, helping people learn about its history of hunting on the High Plains.

The state park’s manager, Clark Carlson-Thompson, has experienced leading the New Year’s Day Hike. He shared that telling people about the land’s history and culture is his favorite part of the activity.

He said the site had held significant meaning to many people of different cultures for thousands of years, and the opportunity to share this knowledge with people is a great privilege.

Dan Mitchell, who has experienced the jump numerous times before, decided to join the New Year’s Day hike because he thought it would be a fun way to kick off the year.

He said the site’s unique history, land formations, and the Native Americans’ clever buffalo-hunting strategy really caught his interest.

Situated a mere 3.5 miles north of Exit 270 on Interstate 15, First People’s Buffalo Jump State Park is a must-see destination for those seeking to delve into the Ulm area’s rich history and stunning natural beauty.

This park is the perfect place for visitors to get out and enjoy the great weather while learning about the region’s fascinating history. Whether a history enthusiast or someone just looking to soak up some sun and fresh air, First People’s Buffalo Jump State Park is sure to have something for everyone.
