Lane Spring Recreation Area, nestled in Missouri’s Mark Twain National Forest, offers a tranquil retreat for nature lovers. Recommended by the USDA Forest Service, this scenic spot along Little Piney Creek has become a popular venue for various gatherings, including weddings and family reunions.
The area features an accessible stone patio overlooking Lane Spring, shaded by a diverse hardwood forest. Visitors can observe the bubbling spring and its ecosystem, home to native plants like watercress and bordered by sycamore, cypress, and oak trees. The day-use facilities open on March 1 with the entire area closing for the season on October 31.
Little Piney Creek, which runs parallel to the recreation area, is designated as a Blue-Ribbon Wild Trout Stream. Anglers can catch Rainbow Trout, Bass, and Sunfish, with specific regulations in place for the wild trout fishery section.
Water activities are popular, with many visitors enjoying wading and tubing in Little Piney Creek. However, swimming is not permitted, and there are no lifeguards or hazard markers present. Visitors should exercise caution during water activities.
Two main trails offer exploration opportunities: the 1.25-mile Blossom Rock Trail and the 1.5-mile Cedar Bluff Trail. They lead to views of Little Piney Creek, providing vistas of the river and rock outcroppings.
Lane Spring Recreation Area offers various camping options, including waterfront sites. Most sites are traditional back-in style, with one pull-through site available for larger vehicles. Campsites feature tables, lantern posts, and fire rings, with some offering RV hookups. Campers have access to vault toilets and drinking water. The area provides well-maintained picnic facilities, including individual sites and group picnic pavilions.
Visitors are encouraged to practice Leave No Trace principles and observe restrictions on firewood transport to prevent the spread of invasive species.
