Minnesota DNR Modernizing State Campground Payment Options

In an effort to modernize and enhance user experience, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced that it is discontinuing the use of on-site self-payment collection boxes at state parks, recreation areas, and forest campgrounds.

Instead, the department is expanding electronic payment options, including the introduction of a mobile app called Yodel.

This move is designed to streamline the payment process, reduce theft risk, and improve data security for visitors and DNR staff.

The Yodel app is set to expand its range of products throughout the summer camping season, supplementing existing payment options such as in-person transactions at state park offices and online reservations through the DNR website.

With state forest campgrounds operating on a first-come, first-served basis and lacking staffed offices, the app offers a convenient and secure method for visitors to make payments.

In addition to the payment system overhaul, the Minnesota DNR is promoting outdoor activities by waiving vehicle permit fees at all 75 state parks and recreation areas on four specific dates: April 22, June 10, September 9, and November 24.

These Free Park Days are intended to encourage Minnesotans to embrace the health and wellness benefits of spending time outdoors and exploring nature. More information can be found on the DNR website for those interested in participating in state park programs.

It is important to note that while the entrance fee waiver applies on these Free Park Days, it does not extend to other activities such as camping, rentals, or guided tours. Visitors planning these activities should be prepared to cover the associated costs.

By introducing the Yodel app and offering free access to state parks on select dates, the Minnesota DNR aims to make outdoor recreation more accessible and enjoyable for residents and visitors.

With a focus on improving security and efficiency, the department is committed to fostering a love for nature and promoting the importance of outdoor activities in the state.
