Electric Outdoors Brings Sustainable Off-Grid Glamping to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Electric Outdoors has launched its first off-grid glamping pilot program in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The company, in collaboration with Innovate Marquette SmartZone, is deploying EO Canopy units and self-sustaining camping platforms in select locations across Marquette and nearby townships.

The EO Canopy provides off-grid amenities, including energy, water, waste management, satellite internet, and EV charging. Electric Outdoors aims to create a “new approach” for outdoor accommodations by integrating sustainability with connectivity.

According to Josef Hjelmaker, founder and CEO of Electric Outdoors, the pilot program in the Upper Peninsula is an ideal testing ground for the company’s off-grid technologies.

“We are incredibly excited to bring this product to the remote and beautiful Upper Peninsula, where we can really put it to the test. The EO Canopy is designed to bring a top-notch glamping experience to EV drivers, overlanders, and other campers who want to get away from the hustle of daily life without sacrificing creature comforts,” Hjelmaker explained.

The pilot program officially began in late August in Negaunee and will run until the end of the camping season.

“Running this pilot in and around Marquette with its beautiful Lake Superior shoreline, and where you are really embraced by the outdoors and all its possibilities, is such a privilege,” Hjelmaker said.

Electric Outdoors has also teamed up with other tech-forward companies to enhance the pilot program’s offerings. Coast RV, based in Nashville, has provided an all-electric Model 1 trailer for guests in Negaunee, powered entirely by the EO Canopy’s off-grid energy system.

In addition to offering a unique experience for campers, the EO Canopy pilot allows landowners and investors to explore the system’s potential. The portable unit enables property owners in remote areas to tap into new revenue streams without the need for traditional utility infrastructure.
