The Ishpeming City Council approved a resolution to apply for a grant through the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) to fund solar lighting enhancements at Brasswire Campground. The decision was made during the council’s regular meeting.
Council member Jason Chapman highlighted the significance of the grant, stating that the initiative aims to bring solar capacity and electricity to the campground. “Going after an MDARD grant for those dollars is a big deal, to go after some solar capacity and bring electricity to Brasswire that’s a big deal and I think that going to be a big deal and a much bigger draw to the campground, having those resources,” Chapman said, as reported by Upper Michigan Source on December 5.
The funding request is tied to legislation associated with the Eagle Mine Humboldt Mill. If approved, the grant, estimated at nearly $130,000, would support the installation of solar-powered infrastructure to enhance the campground’s functionality and appeal.
Chapman expressed optimism about the project’s impact on the local community, emphasizing the potential of solar lighting to make Brasswire Campground a more attractive destination for visitors.
