Officials in Limestone Evaluate Plans to Keep Trafton Lake Campground

Officials in Limestone, Maine, are evaluating options to keep the Trafton Lake Campground and Recreation Area open, following community feedback. A public hearing initially planned to gather more input will be rescheduled following discussions with the potential stakeholders.

The facility spans 89 acres, with a 49-acre campground offering 35 RV sites and 10 tent sites. Trafton Lake, nestled in the landscape of Maine, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts seeking tranquility and natural beauty. The area boasts gently winding trails that navigate through predominantly hardwood forests, presenting stunning views of the adjacent potato fields and the serene lake. These trails, open year-round for non-motorized use, cater to hikers of all skill levels, offering easy looping paths that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the peaceful surroundings.

According to The County report, the campground, which has been operational for over 60 years, has recently faced financial losses attributed to the absence of an on-site manager, leading to deteriorating plumbing and electrical systems and a decline in camper interest.

Randy Brooker, the Select Board chairperson, highlighted the financial challenges, noting the campground’s revenue of $12,000 against operating costs of $26,000 last year. Brooker suggested a lease agreement with Edgecomb could make the town eligible for grants to improve the campground.

Residents Glen Edgecomb and Jim Ireland have proposed solutions to revitalize the campground. Edgecomb expressed interest in purchasing the area, excluding certain town-maintained facilities, and plans to upgrade the electrical hook-ups and infrastructure, with potential expansions including cottages and winter season options.

Ireland, proposing to manage the campground, emphasized the importance of online marketing and reservations, moving the office for better accessibility, and maintaining the grounds, contingent on the town providing a new lawn mower.

During the summer months, Trafton Lake becomes a getaway for RV camping, providing visitors with the unique opportunity to stay. The campground, equipped with RV sites, serves as a place for exploring the trails and enjoying the lake’s scenic views.
